Elston United got ready for Christmas by making seven wins from their last eight games on Saturday, following a 6-2 league victory away at Langwith Whitestar. Elston started strongly and in the eighth minute were rewarded with a fine goal from Barney Repper. James Scott made a jinking run across the edge of the box and his clever pass to Repper was lashed first time into the roof of the net by the Elston midfielder.
Repper’s second goal, in the 20th minute, was an even better strike. Another attack from Elston was blocked by the Langwith, but as the ball bobbled free, Repper ran onto it and fired first-time into the far corner from 20 yards to make it 2-0. Elston’s attacking play made life uncomfortable for the Langwith defenders and, after a series of yellow cards, Langwith’s central defender was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 35th minute.
Elston made their man advantage count almost immediately. In the 37th minute another good run by Scott ended with his shot coming back off the post, but James Clarke was on hand to put the rebound away.
While Elston’s 3-0 half-time lead was well-deserved, the visitors started the second half a little less intensely and were made to pay for a series of missed chances, including a penalty that cannoned off the bar, when Langwith got a goal back in the 55th minute.
That goal seemed to shock Elston back into life and James Scott quickly rounded the Langwith keeper to make it 4-1 just a minute later. More chances came and went for Elston before Will Veys beat his man in the box before firing home in the 75th minute and man-of-the-match Louis Cross scored a similar goal 10 minutes later.
There was just time for Langwith to grab a late goal from a perfectly taken free-kick but Elston were good value for their 6-2 win. Everyone at Elston United wishes Langwith the very best for the rest of the season!
