Elston United came from a goal down to overcome a strong and spirited FC Pelican team in Saturday’s Nottinghamshire Senior Leage Division 2 clash. Elston started the game slowly and a misplaced Elston pass out of defence after 5 minutes handed Kosia Mazlun, Pelican’s centre-forward, the opportunity to give the visitors the lead.
Despite the set back, Elston worked hard to get back into the game and, driven by Joe Wroughton and Barney Repper in midfield, started to launch their own attacks, many involving Harry Johnson down the right wing. Chances came and went for both James Scott and Will Veys, however, and Elston had to wait until the 44th minute to draw level. Wroughton and Repper combined to find Archie Dillon in space on the right, and his pin-point cross was headed home by Scott to make the half-time score 1-1.
By this time, Elston were beginning to get on top of their opponents and Elston’s attacks continued in the second half. After 52 minutes Veys was able to drive at and beat the Pelican left-back and Johnson was on hand to head his delicately chipped cross into the Pelican net. Ten minutes later, an Elston set piece led to a cross that was headed back across the goal by Johnson for Toby Craven to volley home from 5 yards out.
A rare Pelican attack led to a great save from Brad Musgrove, but a fourth goal for Elston was scored by Scott after he’d been fouled in the box, before Teddy Furman completed the scoring in the final minute after cutting in from the left wing and curling a low shot past the diving Pelican keeper.
