FC PELICAN 1-5 ELSTON UNITED

FC PELICAN 1-5 ELSTON UNITED

Stuart Cross26 Jan - 14:41

Elston United’s winning run continues with a comprehensive victory away to FC Pelican

Elston United made it six league wins in a row, with a fine 5-1 win at FC Pelican. On a sticky, difficult pitch neither side were able to play their best football, but Elston’s greater energy, organisation and quality ensured they came away with the three points.

After a quiet start to the game, a first-time through ball from Joe Wroughton was poked home by James Scott to open the scoring. Further chances were at a premium, although James Clarke was unlucky not to double Elston’s lead when his shot was blocked on the line. However, with half-time approaching, Will Veys and Tom Hazelwood combined down the left wing and Hazelwood scored with a fine right-foot strike from the edge of the box past the despairing dive of Pelican’s keeper to make it 2-0.

Elston started the second half positively and after being fouled in the box in the 50th minute, James Clarke got up to score Elston’s third from the spot (see picture above). By this time, Pelican were struggling to develop meaningful attacks, but a mistake at the back by the Elston defence let in the Pelican striker to pull a goal back in the 65th minute.

This setback for Elston led to five immediate substitutions and even though Toby Craven also had to leave the field with an hamstring injury in the 70th minute – leaving Elston to play the last 20 minutes with just 10 men – the extra energy and intensity of the replacements put Elston back on the front foot. After missing a couple of chances, Rui Thacker made no mistake in the 85th minute to make the score 4-1 and another substitute, Teddy Furman, added a fifth in the final seconds following neat interplay between Thacker and Elliott Burrell.

Elston United: Brad Musgrove, Archie Dillon (Sam Adcock 65), Toby Craven (off injured 70), James Smith, Harry Johnson (Jake Leadbetter 65), Barney Repper, Tom Hazelwood, Joe Wroughton (Elliott Burrell 65), Will Veys (Teddy Furman 65), James Scott, James Clarke (Rui Thacker 65).
