MEDEN VALE COLTS 3-1 ELSTON UNITED

MEDEN VALE COLTS 3-1 ELSTON UNITED

Stuart Cross29 Mar - 15:21

Injury-hit Clams run promotion chasers close in hard-fought contest

With just 12 players available, Elston United produced a gutsy, full-blooded performance against promotion-chasing Meden Vale — but ultimately came away with nothing to show for their efforts.

The first half was tight, competitive and hard-fought, with both sides struggling to create clear openings. The Clams were grateful to stand-in keeper Harry Johnson, who pulled off two excellent saves to keep things level. At the other end, Elston came closest to breaking the deadlock when good work from James Clarke and Teddy Furman created space for Rui Thacker, whose volley flew narrowly over at the far post.

Elston started the second half on the front foot and nearly struck early, as Furman read a defensive header and lifted a clever lob just over the bar. He didn’t have to wait long to make his mark. Beating his man down the left, Furman delivered a superb cross that Thacker met with a powerful header into the bottom corner to give the Clams the lead.

The hosts responded quickly, however, levelling the game with a slice of fortune as a corner was deflected past Johnson. From there, the game opened up, with both sides looking dangerous. Clarke forced a sharp save from close range, but it was Meden Vale who edged ahead, finishing from close quarters after a well-worked move down the left.

To their credit, Elston never let their heads drop. They kept pushing and nearly found a way back into the game late on, as Thacker’s cross was headed back across goal by Adam Fear, only for the effort to drift just over.

With Elston committing bodies forward in search of an equaliser, Meden Vale added a third in the 89th minute to seal the result. The home side’s celebrations at the final whistle told their own story — this was no easy win!

A depleted Elston may have left empty-handed, but the performance showed plenty of character, resilience and togetherness, qualities to take into the final games of the season.

Elston United: Harry Johnson, Tom Newbould, Jake Leadbetter, Toby Craven, Xander Millar, Barney Repper, James Scott, Thomas Hazelwood, James Clarke (Adam Fear 75), Rui Thacker, Teddy Furman.
